Astonishingly fast fitting of models to big datasets

Lots of business today were software-dependent because it provides ease of processing unlike to traditional way where it would take a lot of time and effort to finish. As well to different fields where fast data processing is important, a field such as medical research, military purpose, scientific research, and a lot more. But developing a big project software is not easy to maintain for a sole purpose like MOPED that been used to process astronomical surveys.

MOPED is a software developed solely for astronomical surveys. It was developed to process big data into information to understand the formation history of stars. Unfortunately, having different proprietorship in its 5 years development span, It comes to a rock bottom where its complex algorithm is now hard to maintain. Meanwhile, the development team has the idea that form its complex algorithms and processing techniques could be recycled to be used in different fields of industry. One of those is the medical field like I mentioned above. Although the proprietary code itself is not yet compatible to directly use. On part of this idea, the team identifies the fields where they can apply for commercial purposes and only taking a specific algorithm.  With the help of several software engineers and the Software Sustainability Institute, they were able to create several applications and developed a much more flexible framework design so it is easy to be maintained.

One of the codes was used in the alignment of 3D medical volumes lead by Dr. Mark Bastin SFC Brain Imaging Research Center. The project received 200,000 euros from Scottish Enterprise Proof of Concept for its demonstration and several awards also received because of its success leading them to establish a spin-off company called Blackford Analysis Ltd.

Expanding the use of the application of certain software would benefit different sectors like MOPED did where at first its only purpose was to process astronomical data. Also teaming up with experts that could make it work is such a blessing because the program was creatively used rather than leaving it behind without even realizing its potential for future development.
